Ashin Nyāna (အရှင်ဉာဏ; b. 1938), also known as U Nyana, is a [[Burma|Burmese]] Buddhist reformer and founder of the Mou-pyā-wāda, or "Doctrine of the Sky-Blue [One]", a heterodox Buddhist movement that emerged in Burma in the 1970s and became particularly prominent from the late 1990s. Nyāna rejected much of the cosmological and doctrinal framework of conventional Burmese Theravāda Buddhism, arguing that the Buddha's original teaching had been obscured by later developments associated with Brahmanism, Hinduism, and the commentarial tradition. He developed a radically this-worldly interpretation of karma, saṃsāra, the Four Noble Truths, and Buddhist morality, while rejecting or psychologizing traditional accounts of gods, spirits, miracles, and the thirty-one planes of existence. His followers adopted distinctive blue clothing, and Nyāna himself abandoned the conventional monastic robes in 1983 after being expelled from the Theravāda Sangha.

Nyāna's teachings were repeatedly suppressed by the Burmese state and Sangha establishment. He served three lengthy prison terms, from 1983 to 1986, 1991 to 1998, and 2010 to 2016. In 2011, the State Sangha Mahā Nāyaka Committee formally declared his teachings heretical and illegal. Despite the movement's marginal status, Nyāna's writings present an unusually extensive attempt to reconstruct Buddhism as a this-worldly system concerned with human welfare, social morality, equality, and the transformation of conditions producing suffering.

== Relevance ==

Ashin Nyāna is relevant to the study of radical Buddhism for a reason that goes beyond the question of whether he can be classified as a socialist, Marxist, anarchist, or adherent of another modern political ideology. His writings raise a more fundamental question: can radical social thought emerge from Buddhist premises themselves, without an explicit synthesis of Buddhism with a modern Western political ideology?

This question is particularly important for a broad conception of radical Buddhism, understood not simply as the combination of Buddhism with modern left-wing political doctrines, but as the use of Buddhist ideas to subject existing social arrangements to fundamental criticism and to envisage substantial changes in the way human beings live together. Nyāna's importance in this context lies in the unusual extent to which his radical reconstruction of Buddhist doctrine extends beyond individual soteriology and into questions concerning human society, authority, equality, and the conditions of human flourishing. His arguments on these subjects are discussed in the "[[#Ideas|Ideas]]" section below.

Nyāna's case should nevertheless be approached cautiously. His thought developed in twentieth-century Burma/Myanmar and was therefore formed in an intellectual environment already shaped by colonial modernity, Western scholarship, science, and socialism. == Biography ==

Ashin Nyāna was born in 1938 in Khaung Kwe village in Pakokku District, Magway Division. He entered the Buddhist monastic order as a novice in 1952, at the age of fourteen, and began studying Buddhist scriptures. He received full ordination as a monk in 1958 and continued his scriptural studies until 1963. He subsequently practiced meditation in forest monasteries in Upper Burma and studied traditional Theravāda Buddhism, including Buddhaghosa's ''Visuddhimagga''. He later left the forest monasteries and visited prominent monks in order to hear their teachings. 

Nyāna eventually became dissatisfied with the traditional Buddhist path as it was taught to him. He concluded that the conventional teachings did not provide a satisfactory means of liberation and began searching the Buddhist scriptures for what he regarded as the Buddha's authentic teaching. According to accounts of his life, this search became particularly important around 1967, when he concluded that the canonical corpus contained evidence of two incompatible representations of the Buddha and two incompatible bodies of teaching.<ref>Foxeus (2024), "The Doctrine of the Sky-Blue One". He examined the Tipiṭaka and commentarial literature and attempted to distinguish earlier Buddhist teachings from later developments. In particular, he rejected teachings concerning previous and future lives as incompatible with what he considered the Buddha's original teaching. The Four Noble Truths consequently became the center of his reconstruction of Buddhism. 

During the 1970s Nyāna began disseminating his ideas through sermons, books, and cassette recordings. Many of his books were not formally published but were printed in small numbers and circulated among followers. His writings were characteristically associated with the light-blue color that subsequently became the identifying mark of his movement. On April 22, 1981, Nyāna submitted a 38-page proposal for Buddhist doctrinal reform to the State Mahā Nāyaka Committee (''Ma Ha Na''), the body responsible for regulating the Sangha. He argued that poor Buddhist morality and ignorance of the Four Noble Truths and karma had contributed to conflict and disorder in society, and he criticized the established monastic authorities. He was arrested in September 1981. 

Nyāna was defrocked in 1983 after being accused of claiming to have attained arahantship. On February 10, 1983, he abandoned the conventional saffron robes and adopted the blue clothing that became characteristic of the movement. His followers commemorate this date as Dhamma Wihārī Day. Although he was no longer recognized as a member of the Theravāda Sangha, his followers continued to regard him as a monk and commonly addressed him as ''hsayādaw''. Members of the movement who took on the role of religious teachers were known as dhamma-wihārī, "abodes of Dhamma." The movement became known as ''Mou-pyā-wāda'', "Doctrine of the Sky-Blue [One]," and also as ''Pyissouppān-kamma-wāda-bouddha-bhāthā'', "Buddhism of the Doctrine of Present Karma." The latter name reflects one of Nyāna's central doctrinal innovations: his insistence that karma should be understood entirely in terms of actions and consequences occurring in the present life.

Nyāna's movement continued to grow despite repeated repression. He was imprisoned from 1983 to 1986, sentenced to ten years' imprisonment in 1991 and released in 1998, and sentenced to twenty years' imprisonment in 2010. He was released in a general amnesty in January 2016. The charges varied, but a major factor in the state's treatment of him was the dissemination of teachings considered heretical by the state-backed Sangha authorities. The movement became increasingly popular from the late 1990s onward. By the 2000s, courses in Nyāna's teachings were being offered at centers in Yangon, Mandalay, and elsewhere. His followers came from diverse social backgrounds, including farmers, teachers, students, businesspeople, workers, professionals, and political activists. On November 15, 2011, the State Sangha Mahā Nāyaka Committee formally declared Nyāna's teachings to constitute heresy (adhamma) and prohibited their dissemination. The official rejection of his movement was not simply a dispute over individual doctrines: Nyāna's teachings challenged the authority of the established Sangha, rejected major components of the doctrinal framework taught by monastic institutions, and questioned established relationships between monks and laypeople. Following his release in 2016, Nyāna remained an influential figure among his followers, although the movement was no longer as cohesive as it had been before his imprisonment.

== Ideas ==

The foundation of Nyāna's thought is his attempt to distinguish what he regarded as the Buddha's original teaching from later developments in Buddhist tradition. The Buddha presented in ''The Buddha: Present-Day Kammavāda Buddhism'' — usually referred to by it's main Burmese title, ''Hpayā'' — is consequently very different from the supernatural and cosmologically elaborate Buddha of conventional Burmese Theravāda.<ref>Nyāna, Ashin (အရှင်ဉာဏ) (n.d.). «ပစ္စုပ္ပန်ကမ္မဝါဒဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာ ဓမ္မဝိဟာရီ အရှင်ဉာဏ၏ ဘုရား» [The Buddha: Present-Day Kammavāda Buddhism]. (Unpublished.) Hereafter, ''Hpayā''.</ref> Nyāna portrays the Buddha as fundamentally human and as a teacher whose knowledge, practice, and liberation are all within the reach of human beings. He explicitly states that the Buddha was born as an ordinary human being and became a Buddha only later. He describes the Buddha as someone whose thoughts, speech, and actions do not go beyond what human beings can understand.<ref>''Hpayā'', p. 29.</ref> This reconstruction allows Nyāna to present radical doctrinal changes not as departures from Buddhism but as a recovery of the Buddha's original teaching. His method is strongly text-critical: later doctrines and interpretations are rejected when he believes that they contradict the Buddha's teaching.

Nyāna's reconstruction is fundamentally concerned with human life in the present world. The Buddha's teaching is presented as dealing with suffering, peace, and the way to peace as these are experienced by human beings here and now. In discussing the Buddha's renunciation, he explicitly rejects the idea that the goal was to escape from being human. Siddhattha had initially pursued forms of practice aimed at transcending the human condition, but came to regard this as a mistaken direction. He was seeking liberation in which human beings could remain human, rather than liberation through disappearing from the body and mind. The same orientation appears in Nyāna's account of the Buddha's teaching. The Buddha became a monk in order to explain four things concerning human life: suffering, what must be rejected because it produces suffering, peace and freedom, and what must be cultivated to bring about peace and freedom.<ref>''Hpayā'', pp. 30–31.</ref> He consequently treats the Four Noble Truths as the central content of Buddhism.

Nyāna's interpretation of kamma is closely connected with his this-worldly reconstruction. He contrasts the Buddha's teaching with doctrines in which kamma operates across three lives. According to Nyāna, the Buddha's doctrine of kamma concerns human action rather than existence before birth or after death. "His doctrine of kamma was not like this. It was defined only with respect to the human being. It did not include the time before a person existed or after a person died."<ref>''Hpayā'', p. 30.</ref> He further explains that the Buddha's concern was not with the human being considered as a fixed entity or aggregate, but with action.

According to Nyāna, human beings live together because social organization provides substantial advantages. These advantages include both protection against oppression and the ability to organize the work necessary for human survival.

: "When people experience oppression from their human environment, they must resist that oppression. If they have to resist individually, they must make a very great effort to succeed. If they resist through an organization, however, the result will be immeasurably greater. This is the first benefit obtained from human beings organizing and living together."<ref>''Hpayā'', p. 13.</ref>

He then turns directly to material conditions:

: "The things that must be done for one person to survive and exist as a human being are extremely numerous. Food, clothing, housing, and health are all matters that a human being cannot avoid attending to."<ref>''Hpayā'',p. 13.</ref>

Nyāna explains that social organization makes it possible to divide these tasks among many people. A thousand people can divide a thousand tasks among themselves, and specialization makes each task easier and more efficient. He therefore treats division of labor and collective organization as important conditions of human flourishing. This is one of the clearest places in his writings where Buddhist analysis extends into questions of material welfare, social organization, and collective action. His argument does not amount to a theory of socialism or revolutionary politics, but it does treat oppression as a social problem and collective resistance as a legitimate response to it.

Nyāna's interpretation of suffering likewise has a strongly human and social dimension. He distinguishes suffering itself from the external things that people ordinarily regard as desirable or undesirable. In discussing ''lābha'' (gain or wealth), ''sakkāra'' (honor or power), and ''siloka'' (prestige), he argues that people mistakenly regard the absence of these things as suffering. The real problem lies instead in the bodily, verbal, and mental transgressions committed in trying to obtain them or prevent their loss.

The point is important for understanding Nyāna's social thought. He does not simply identify wealth, power, or prestige themselves with suffering. Instead, he asks what people do in pursuit of them and what kinds of social relationships and forms of conduct those pursuits produce.

Nyāna also develops an unusual account of the social origins of morality and political authority. He argues that the basic principles of moral conduct did not originate with a particular religious teacher. Rather, they emerged from the requirements of human beings living together.

He then traces the emergence of political government to the need to enforce these principles. Rulers and kings emerged to protect Garudhamma, while political ideologies and religious doctrines subsequently served similar functions. He even proposes that when political power disappears, its ideological residue may continue in the form of religion. This amounts to a functional and broadly historical account of the relationship between morality, political authority, ideology, and religion. It is one of the manuscript's most striking passages for the study of Buddhist social and political thought.

Nyāna's this-worldly reconstruction of Buddhism also challenges established forms of religious authority. If the Buddha was an ordinary human being and his teaching was concerned with matters that human beings can understand, then the authority of later religious institutions cannot simply be assumed to derive from supernatural status. Nyāna repeatedly emphasizes the Buddha's humanity. "The Buddha is not someone who knows something enormous and unknowable. His thoughts, speech, and actions do not go even slightly beyond the field that human beings can understand."<ref>''Hpayā'', p. 29.</ref> This conception is connected with his rejection of supernatural representations of the Buddha and with his criticism of later Buddhist practices and doctrines. It also provides the basis for his broader challenge to the authority of established Theravāda interpretations: the Buddha's teaching is to be examined through its content and consequences rather than accepted simply because it is transmitted by religious authorities. ''Hpayā'' similarly presents the Buddha's own institutional authority as limited.
