This page describes the general copyright terms and conditions of use for content published by the Radical Buddhist Project (RBP), across both its text archive and its encyclopedia. It is not a formal legal process, and nothing on this page should be read as legal advice or as a legally binding assertion of rights by the RBP.

Scope

This policy applies to all material hosted on this site, without distinction between encyclopedia articles, country and biographical profiles, editorial commentary and formatting, and archived original-language source texts and their translations. A separate page, Copyrights of Republished and Translated Texts, describes the additional vetting process specific to hosted historical source texts and translations, including how the RBP handles material whose copyright status could not be fully determined.

General Terms of Use

Content on this site may be freely read, referred to, and quoted from, subject to normal academic quotation standards: quotations should be reasonably limited in length relative to the source, should not substitute for consulting the original page, and should be clearly attributed to the specific page and, where identified, its author(s).

Beyond this kind of quotation, material on this site may not be copied, mirrored, redistributed, or republished elsewhere, in whole or in substantial part, without the prior permission of the relevant rights holder(s). This restriction applies uniformly across the site: it is not limited to any one category of content, and applies equally to encyclopedia articles as to archived source texts and translations.

Some individual pages carry an exception to this general rule, noted in a "Copyrights" block at the foot of the page. These exceptions arise only in the context of hosted source texts and translations — for instance, where a text has been confirmed to be in the public domain, or where explicit permission for wider reproduction has been obtained from a rights holder — and are described further on Copyrights of Republished and Translated Texts. In the absence of such a notice, the general restriction above applies.

Ownership

Copyright in each page is held by its main author(s) (as defined in the Editorial Guidelines) and the RBP together, unless a page's Copyrights block states otherwise.

Requesting Permission

Requests for uses beyond quotation — for example, republishing a page or excerpt elsewhere, or reproducing an archived text beyond what the general terms above allow — should be directed to the Managing Editor at editor@radicalbuddhism.net, including a description of the material in question and the intended use.
